The Heard Natural Science Museum  and Wildlife Sanctuary was the vision of one woman, Miss Bessie Heard, who devoted most of her lifetime to the people and the City of McKinney.  The Heard was opened in 1967 as a means to preserve an area where future generations could enjoy wild life and experience nature.

There are numerous events, wonderful walking trails and educational opportunities at the Heard Natural Science Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary as well as Texas' venomous snakes, rocks, minerals and fossils, seashells and marine life, North Texas ecosystems, and a 289-acre wildlife sanctuary.
