KRIS GORDON

Kris Gordon

Where: The Ranch at Las Colinas, 857 W. John Carpenter Fwy. 75039
When:  Friday & Saturday, August 4 & 5 around 8 p.m.
Cost:  Free admission

Among all of the GREAT restaurants that Irving offers, The Ranch is one of my top picks.  It hits on all points . . . the service is friendly and attentive, the food is fresh (farm to fork) and delicious, and the music is down home and local.  You just can't find those great combinations very often.  Hailing from the West Texas Panhandle, Kris Gordon is as country as they come.  His style of music will make you proud you're from Texas. And if you're not from Texas, it's okay.  We're happy you got here as fast as you could.  Learn More

MY SISTER EILEEN

Where: The Irving Arts Center, 3333 N. MacArthur Blvd. 75062
When:  Friday - Sunday, August 4 - 6.  Fri 7:30 p.m. | Sat 7:30 p.m. | Sun 2:30 p.m.
Cost:  $19 - $28

When two sisters try to take New York by storm, fun flourishes.  One is a writer, one has her sights set on Broadway, and the cascade of colorful characters that come to visit  are full of eccentric charm.  Some good seats are still available, but hurry.  Learn More

DIXIE REX BAND

Dixie Rex Band

Where: The OUTLAW Tap Room at The Four Seasons Resort and Club, 4150 N. MacArthur Blvd. 75038
When:  Saturday, August 5 from 6 - 9 p.m.
Cost:  Free admission

Although the Four Seasons has been in Irving since they turned the lights on, their OUTLAW Tap Room is fairly new.  So I can understand if you haven't made it out there yet.  You should go on Saturday and listen to the Dixie Rex Band while ordering one of their craft beers, or my favorite, the Peggy Sue(sana) Margarita - because no good story ever started with water.  Learn More

LET'S PLAY GAMING EXPO

This is the first time we've hosted the Let's Play Gaming Expo here at the Irving Convention Center, but it's already created a huge buzz around the Metroplex.  Everyone's talking about it.  It's one of the most interactive conventions that celebrates all of gaming - board, card, or video.  With over 80 vendor tables, over 80 arcade cabinets, tournaments, qualifiers, special guests and more, it makes my head spin like a joystick. Come by and see what it's all about.  Learn More

If you like Texas Blues, you gotta come hear The Amazing Holland K. Smith Band.  They've performed at the Texas Musicians Museum several times and each time it's a full crowd.  It's no wonder they keep getting invited back to Irving.  For one of the coolest venues around, drop by and listen to the band while you order up some good Texas barbecue from Smokin' Joe's Cafe.  Learn More

HERITAGE HOUSE TOURS

Where:  303 S. O'Connor 75060, just north of Downtown Irving
When:  Sunday, August 6 from 3 - 5 p.m.
Cost:  Free admission

I have to admit that I am a huge history buff (or nerd if you ask my kids).  If you sit down and think about it, all of this area was once just prairie, woods, rivers and creeks.  So what was Mr. Schulze thinking when he moved his family here and built his home, the Heritage House?  What drew people to move out of the convenience of Dallas and other cities and into the wilderness?  Not afraid of hard work and hopeful that the railroad would eventually be built through the area, I'm sure he envisioned the beginning of a small, quaint town with great folks and a thriving community.  Once you tour the Heritage House, you can get a feel for what it was like to settle down in a sparsely inhabited area.  It's really cool!  Learn More
