Every year when Mother's Day comes around you rack your brain trying to think of a gift that's meaningful and that she'll love. But when you ask her what she needs, she says, "Oh, I don't need anything." Am I right? Well, I'm going to give you a list of the top 5 things that your Mom wants from you, but she'll never really say it. Or if these don't suit your fancy, you can also choose from any of the area events listed at irvingtexas.com.
1. She wants to visit with you
Your Mom wants you to come around and visit. She wants you to ask her advice about your life events, or just ask her questions. And, yes, she wants you to tell her your problems. She wants to spend some quality time with you. And to make the conversation even more special, discuss your life goals between sips of an ice cold, handmade chocolate shake, made with Blue Bell ice cream. Yep, I'm talking about Big State Fountain and Grill. You can go all out and splurge on a burger and fries too, but while you're eating, really listen to what she has to say. In five years, she won't remember flowers, candy, or what you ordered to eat, but she'll remember the time you spent with her. She'll remember the conversation and hold it in her heart that you asked for her opinion. Okay, maybe she'll remember that delicious shake, and perhaps a bouquet of flowers too.
2. She wants to laugh with you
Hearing you laugh is music to her ears, and listening to the whole family laugh together is priceless. Now, I'm going to let you in on a little known secret. Irving has not one, but two Panic Rooms where the whole family can enjoy an hour of fine tuning their reasoning skills by following clues to escape a themed room. I've done this before and it is tons of fun. Just know that the laughing may be at your expense as you come up with off the wall answers to some very cryptic clues. Visit the Dallas Panic Room or Escape Rooms HQ and have a blast!
3. She wants to see your heart
Irving is a city full of caring people. For just about every need, there's a fundraiser, a community rally, or non-profit foundation to fulfill it. Here in Irving, we just don't leave our neighbors behind, y'all. Well, on Saturday from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. you can take your mom to get her car washed at 2333 West Shady Grove 75060, which will help Irving youth to play baseball in the Baseball World Series Tournament this summer. Impress your mom and give a big tip! Also on Saturday from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. is the 2nd Saturday Market at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 2901 N. O'Connor Road 75062. Here you can find all kinds of bargains on new and used items, but also they're collecting non-perishable food for Irving Cares. So stop by the store before you head out and get the good peanut butter, the high end cereals and some toiletry items to give away. Your Mom will love you for it and you'll feel great that you helped others.
4. She wants keepsakes
Every mom has that special box where she keeps hand-drawn pictures, homemade cards, and especially that picture where you traced your hands in Kindergarten. If you're a Mom with younger children, take them to the East Branch Library, 440 S. Nursery Rd. 75060, on Saturday from 2:30 - 3:30 p.m. for Mother's Day Crafts. Here children can make their Moms a card, necklace and bouquet. Or for Moms with teens, drop by the South Branch Library, 601 Schulze Dr. 75060, on Saturday from 2 - 6 p.m. and make her a Bohemian flower crown that will put Snapchat’s floral filter to shame. Better yet, make two crowns and take selfies together.
5. She wants a night out
Dads, I'm directing this to you. Occasionally your wife needs to enjoy a night on the town. To prepare for the evening, gift her a spa package from any one of Irving's luxury spas. Next, pick a restaurant where you can make reservations. Nothing sounds better than releasing her from decisions and responsibilities for the night. When you say, "We have a reservation for two," she hears "I love you." Finally, top the evening off with some entertainment. On Friday at 7:00 p.m. at the Whistlestop Plaza, 123 W. Irving Blvd. 75060, the Irving Concert Series presents T'Monde, a French and Creole inspired band. Also on Friday night at 7:30 p.m., at the Irving Arts Center, 3333 N. MacArthur Blvd. 75062, the Irving Chorale presents "Broadway: Then and Now." Also at the Irving Arts Center, on Saturday at 8:00 p.m., the Las Colinas Symphony Orchestra presents pianist Antonio Di Christofano, pictured below. Or if Crawfish is your kinda thing, on Saturday at the Texas Musicians Museum, 222 E. Irving Blvd. 75060, from 4:30 - 10:30 p.m., you can attend the KNON Music Fest BBQ and Crawfish Cookout.
Just remember, Moms spend the better part of their lives raising children the best way they know how. Give her some time to sit back and admire her work. And know that when you ask her what she wants for Mother's Day, she'll say "Oh, I don't need anything," because you've already been giving her the greatest gift all year - your time.
