Texans are a unique lot. We have our own lingo, our own style of food, our own music and we're mighty proud of it all. From over yonder to pert' near here, you don't have to look far to find the best of Texas in Irving. Here is your guide to what is truly Texan about our town and how to grab it by the horns - because that's what we Texans do.  There's always more than meets the eye, so take a peek at the full events calendar on our website at www.irvingtexas.com.

Fritz Park Cows

WHERE: Fritz Park Petting Zoo
WHEN: Fri/Sat @ 10 am - 6 pm | Sun @ 2 - 6 pm
COST: Free

Experience a taste of life on the farm, without ever leaving Irving.  Just south of town is a petting farm that allows kids and their families to interact with a number of farm animals such as goats, donkeys, rabbits and even a miniature pony.   For 35 years the farm has offered a peek at country living right here in Irving. In addition to the petting zoo, they offer guided tours of the farm, where kids who wouldn't ordinarily get to see these animals can learn more about them. But hurry, the farm closes for the season on July 31.  LEARN MORE

Rochelle Rabouin

Children's book author, singer, dancer and storyteller, Ms. Rabouin is a delightful and popular children's entertainer. With a display of over 75 hats of all sizes, shapes and colors, she'll discuss the many stories behind each hat and who wears them in the neighborhood.  LEARN MORE

IAC Farmer's Market

WHERE: Irving Arts Center
WHEN: Saturday @ 9 am - 2 pm
COST: Free

Serve up some healthy fresh vegetables on your table tonight with what you can find at our Farmer's Market. And stop by the vendors and artisans tables too for some one-of-a-kind items.  LEARN MORE

2-FER: While you're at the Arts Center, drop in to view the latest artwork exhibit - The Mother Road Revisited: Route 66 Then and Now.

Post Oak Smokehouse

It's no secret that Irving is home to some awesome restaurants. And that holds true for some good 'ol Texan barbecue. With so many to choose from, I've listed my top three.

  • Post Oak Smokehouse - I hadn't eaten from Post Oak in awhile so I had it for lunch today.  OMG, is it ever so good - tender and juicy, nice smokey flavor.  It's a Texas taste, that's for sure.
  • Whiskey Cake - Their Whiskey Braised Short Ribs are to die for.  It has a whiskey demi-glace that adds just the right flavor to their mouthwatering ribs. And don't forget a serving of their Whiskey Cake for dessert. Mmmmmm.
  • The Ranch - I know I keep bringing you back to The Ranch, but there's a reason for it. There are very few restaurants who score a 10 on both their food and service every single time I'm there, and The Ranch is one of them.  I recommend their TX Whiskey BBQ Baby Back Ribs with their homemade buttery cornbread and creamy cadi-mac'n cheese.  It's so, so good!

Y'all have a wonderful weekend now, ya hear?
