Irving Public Library (IPL) serves a forward-thinking and diverse city, named the first municipality to win the Texas Award for Performance Excellence in 2011. The library’s vision is to be a center of the community, improving the quality of life of Irving residents through community engagement, educational events and advanced technology. Currently the system consists of one central library and three satellite branches in the north, west and east areas of town. IPL is also sustained by a vibrant Friends group that supports literacy in the community through many philanthropic projects. Irving regularly works with national organizations and retailers, cultural societies, private businesses and nearby schools to present community events, award-winning author panels and exhibits. Today the system boasts four modern community centers with state-of-the-art offerings that draw people to the area, a far cry from Irving’s first library, set up in the corner of a furniture store in 1941. The Gold LEED certified West Irving Library opened in 2011, marking a new era of capital improvements for Irving’s libraries. Valley Ranch Library underwent a 5,000 square-foot expansion in early 2014. When the South Irving Library is complete in 2015, it will replace the Central Library in providing literary events and high-tech educational services to Irving’s youth. In 2016, East Branch will celebrate twenty years of changing lives and community revitalization with ongoing enhancements.
