CAPERTONS HONORED AS IRVING HIGH SPRITED CITIZENS
IRVING, Texas (Oct. 4, 2013) - Irving Mayor Beth Van Duyne and the Irving City Council recognized Patty Landers Caperton and Tom Caperton as Irving High Spirited Citizens on Thursday, Oct. 3, for their dedication to many sectors of the Irving community.

Patty Caperton was a long-time City of Irving employee who retired as Director of the Irving Public Library System in 2010. But, retirement didn't slow down her community involvement. As a faithful supporter of the Friends of the Irving Library organization for many years, she continues to volunteer weekly at Wednesday work days and all of their special events.

Her involvement with the Irving/Las Colinas Rotary Club is also well known. Prior to the Irving and Las Colinas Rotary Clubs merging, she held several leadership positions with the Las Colinas Rotary, and was the first female president of any Irving Rotary Club in 1993. After the merger, she helped organize the 75th Anniversary Celebration and continues her favorite Rotary activity of reading to children at Thomas Haley Elementary School.

Patty Caperton was also the first chair of the Irving School's Public Information Advisory Committee and served as a co-chair for the American Cancer Society's Hollywood Premier Night in 1995.

After her retirement, she and her husband Tom Caperton joined the Irving Heritage Society. Since then, she has chaired the organization's Vintage Valentine Tea; Heritage House Tea Recipe Book project; Treasures and Oddities Silent Auction; and served on the Heritage House 100th Anniversary Celebration steering committee. She was the 2013 Valentine Sweetheart, and for the second straight year, serves as Second Vice President in charge of Heritage Society programs.

Tom Caperton has been a constant by his wife's side in all Heritage Society activities, dedicating a good amount of time to the Treasures and Oddities Silent Auction and Irving Trivia Contests. For the past two years, he served as treasurer for the Family Advocacy Center Board of Directors, with the responsibility of overseeing the payroll as well as other organizational finances.

He is also an active member of the Greater Irving/Las Colinas Chamber of Commerce Small Business Services Committee and the La Cima Heritage Committee, where the couple shares responsibility as the committee's co-chairs. Together the two of them serve as deacons at their church, where Tom Caperton is also a church elder.

"Working together or individually, Tom and Patty are deserving of the Irving High Spirited Award for their service to so many areas of our community, said long-time Irving resident Mary Higbie, who nominated the Capertons for this award.

The High Spirited Citizen program was initiated in 1988 by the Irving Convention and Visitors Bureau.  Its purpose is to encourage the spirit of volunteerism.  To date, more than 400 of Irving's "unsung" heroes have been honored with the award. For more information visit irvingtexas.com
