OF MILES AND MILESTONES:

Local woman expected to run into the record books as Irving Marathon

Marks 10th anniversary on April 2

IRVING, TX (Mar. 25, 2022) –  In 2012, more than 1,900 runners hit the streets of Las Colinas for the inaugural Irving Marathon. Despite Covid setbacks, this year, more than 3,000 marathon runners will lace up for the 10th annual event on April 2.  Among them will be local runner Angela Tortorice, who is set to become the first woman to ever complete 1000 marathons when she crosses the finish line.

Tortorice already holds a Guinness world record for “Most Marathons Run in a Calendar Year-Female.” In 2013 she was inducted into the Marathon Maniacs Hall of Fame and named the organization’s Female Marathon Maniac of the year in 2021. She has competed in marathons in all 50 states. The 54-year old Tortorice is an accounting specialist for Vistra Corp., a TXU Energy subsidiary, whose headquarters are just three miles from the Irving Marathon finish line. Her race charity work focuses on MS, and Vistra supports those efforts.

In its ten year history, the Irving Marathon has donated more than $60,000 to the Baylor Scott & White Irving Foundation’s programs to eliminate childhood obesity in schools.

10-year Marathon Milestones:

  • Over $60,000 donated directly from the Irving Marathon to the Baylor Scoot & White Irving Foundation for programs related to childhood obesity in our schools.
  • 7 years in, the Irving Marathon Running Series was started. The Irving Marathon team organizes 7 additional events in the same location, with a different theme, and a different distance in order to keep the community engaged year-round. (A bit different than most communities where there is only one big race a year in town.) There is even one for dog lovers.
  • Developed a scholarship program for Irving ISD students as part of the Irving Schools Foundations partnership.
  • Developed relationships with community partners to establish processes and enhance each event experience by working together with the community.

About Irving Marathon Running Series: The Irving Marathon believes with providing healthy lifestyle opportunities and community involvement we can reverse the trend of 35% of Texans battling obesity. Founded in 2012, The Irving Marathon partnered with community organizations in Irving, Grand Prairie, and Coppell to encourage students to learn healthy exercise routines and habits. Together we raise funds and awareness to battle childhood obesity at the elementary and middle school level and provide scholarships for high school seniors.
