As we emerge from our pandemic isolation and start traveling again, connecting with loved ones after a long and isolated separation, remembering our freedoms this year takes on a whole new meaning. Freedom encompasses so many aspects of our lives that we can't begin to recognize or appreciate fully the joy that comes with it, until it's gone. This year we invite you to celebrate with us in Irving on Memorial Day weekend through various activities across town. However you choose to remember your freedoms, Irving can help you along the way.

Celebrate Freedom Through Honor

Jack D. Huffman Community Building, 801 W Irving Blvd | 972-721-4863

The annual Memorial Day Ceremony downtown honors Irving veterans and is hosted by the Veterans Memorial Park Committee. This year, Councilman Mark Zeske will be the guest speaker with a moment of reflection by retired US Air Force Master Sergeant Damon L. Southard. Afterward, The Silvertones will honor us with a musical tribute. The ceremony begins at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 30, at the Jack D. Huffman Community Building, 801 W. Irving Blvd., and ends at the Irving Veterans Memorial Park Wall of Commemoration, 644 Rock Island Road. If you've never stopped to view the Wall of Commemoration, consider attending this special ceremony.

Celebrate Freedom With Family

Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas at Las Colinas, 4150 N MacArthur Blvd | 972-717-0700

It's always a special time anytime you visit the Four Seasons. This Memorial Day weekend, you and your family are invited to stay and play with family-friendly weekend activities, like water slides, a poolside street taco stand, s'mores by the campfire, kid's night in, a movie under the stars and, of course, live music on the patio. Plan that staycation you've been thinking about and enjoy the many amenities at this oasis on the boulevard. Then check out their fun-filled weekend schedule for non-stop fun.

Celebrate Freedom Through Adoption

Irving Animal Adoption Center, 4140 Valley View Ln | 972-721-2256

Give a pet its freedom. It's a great time to find a new friend at the Irving Animal Shelter - the weather's perfect for taking walks and enjoying the sunshine. It's really easy to adopt, too! Either visit the center or view the dogs and cats online. Then pop in any day between Tuesday and Saturday, from 1-5:30 p.m., fill out some paperwork, pay an adoption fee, and take home your perfect friend. Adopted pets are already spayed or neutered, have their appropriate shots, tests and meds, are chipped, and you get a free sample of Science Diet food. Believe me when I say the adoption fee is a real bargain compared to what all you get.

Celebrate Freedom With Food

Tommy's Barbecue, 2840 W Irving Blvd | 972-986-0559

Naturally when you think of Memorial Day weekend, you think of barbecue and picnics. In Irving, there are so many great restaurants that serve barbecue. But one local place that's well known to the locals is my favorite - Tommy's Barbecue on Irving Boulevard. Everything they serve is homemade and cooked to perfection. I prefer the chopped barbecue sandwich, but all items on the menu are fresh and delicious. Pick up a family pack and head on down to any park in Irving for a memorable family picnic.

The true essence of Memorial Day is remembering those who have died fighting for our freedom. However you spend yours, we wish you a safe and happy holiday weekend.
