Very few of us will ever get to dine in a restaurant in Kathmandu, Nepal, but lucky for us, Cafemandu - Flavors of Nepal restaurant has brought all those flavors right here to Irving. Let’s be fair, some of us (raises hand) don’t even know where Nepal is on the map. But if you’ve heard of Mount Everest, it’s the highest point in the Himalayan mountain range, which lies between Nepal and Tibet.

Where to get your Cajun fix, catch the LSU game, and other lagniappes

As much as I want to give a big Texas welcome to our Louisiana neighbors, who came en masse last weekend, I know firsthand they aren’t here by choice. With power still out in places that were lucky, and infrastructure wiped out in places that weren’t, Irving might be playing host for a while.

Which is why I’m taking it upon myself - as someone whose passions include all-things Louisiana (topping that list is my own family of Ida evacuees from Baton Rouge) - to point out a few places to help our gulf coast guests feel a little more at home.

Hot Takes on Cold Treats in Irving

Friday, September 3, 2021 10:00 AM by Lori Sirmen

For me, childhood summers were filled with push-ups and creamsicles, plus ICEEs, Slurpees and Slush Puppies - you know the beverages responsible for giving brain freeze to millions? 7-Eleven was Saturday heaven! And there was Baskin-Robbins ... and if Instagram was a thing, it would have been filled with colorful photos of Lucky Charms, Pop Tarts Toaster Pastries, and Froot Loops: a rainbow of brightly colored cereal rings with a fruity flavor (and a brand fraught with controversy when the news broke that all the delicious, multicolored O's that make up Froot Loops don't actually represent different fruit flavors. And again, when Kellogs gave the mascot Toucan Sam a new look.) This week I am celebrating a birthday, so I’m feeling a little nostalgic. But I digress.

Definitely a place locals will recommend when visiting Irving, Water Street is a scenic blend of restaurants and to-go shops that create a small-town Main Street feel, even though you're surrounded by Las Colinas skyscrapers. It is the perfect place to catch up with friends or gather for a family meal; there is something here for everyone. Located just around the bend from Toyota Music Factory and along the shores of Lake Carolyn, you can enjoy lakeside beers, gourmet coffee and some of the freshest Mexican cuisine you will ever have!

Bacon: A Sizzling Love Story

Friday, August 20, 2021 3:00 PM by Lori Sirmen

Are you a bacon lover?

The aroma. The sizzle. The crackle. The taste. The smell of bacon in the morning, or any time really, is like nothing else. It can literally make your mouth water. Bacon is an American staple in homes and restaurants alike. Commonly featured in breakfast dishes and sandwiches, bacon has made its way into our desserts and cocktails too. It’s not the latest food trend though, because bacon transcends trendiness. Whether you wrap a jalapeno with it, use it to garnish a Bloody Mary, or pile it high on a BLT, bacon is a versatile food that has nearly as many uses as it does lovers. Yes, bacon is for lovers! You’ve probably heard “you had me at bacon” or “I love you as much as bacon” or even “I love you MORE than bacon” and other odes to the savory strip. This puts bacon squarely in the camp of Love & Romance.
